Statement
I began by looking at different art movements throughout history. This piece is inspired by ‘Surrealism’ whilst keeping in mind different designers from the past and the present who have been influenced by the art movement; Elsa Schiaparelli and Christopher Kane. Another important influence on my project was the work Salvador Dali did on the 1945 film ‘Spellbound’ where I took the idea for the draping of my garment. I have also been inspired by practitioners throughout the history of art and design, such as; Picasso, Van Gogh, Magritte, Vermeer, Jean Paul Gaultier and Iris Van Herpen.

‘Gothic Feminisation’

Statement
My garment portrays the contrast between femininity and darker, gothic themes. I have used artwork such as feather prints to show the dainty, delicate side of my work mixed with darker colours and knitted textiles. With my main inspiration being Tim Burton, I have mixed the creepy, soulless eyes with pastel, feminine colours to present the contrast. Using more gothic themes throughout my work such as the ram heads, I have painted a delicate mask to convey how femininity is shown through the revealing dress yet using the mask to cover the face.

‘Unorthodox Mythology’

Statement
My FMP was based on mythology from an unorthodox perspective. I was heavily influenced by the Greek Gods such as Zeus and Nyx the primordial Greek goddess of darkness and the night. I have also been inspired by studies of the sun goddess and the black flames of Amaterasu which I have used as surface decoration on my fashion designs. I chose pin striped fabric based on the night sky, and spatial voids seen in the night sky to inspire my kimono styled garment which is intended to be unisex.

Statement
My designs reflect my research by being inspired by Vivienne Westwood. I chose tartan fabric for the bodice; when I think of Westwood I instantly think of her famous blue/ pink tartan which has been used on a variety of her designs- particularly during the Punk era. Westwood was also known for her unusual, geometric and sharp tailoring, which I wanted to capture in my bodice with the pintucks and in the drapes in my skirt. I also wanted to link my activism research into my designs and during the photo shoot I included a banner inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s manifesto.
