This project is about the effects of mental health and how we affect this by environmental behaviour, having these illusions that distort your perception of reality. The artwork displayed combine all the elements of my idea. The 50x 60cm painting is a visual representation of a distorted mind, while being colourful and chaotic. The images show one’s spirituality and being misunderstood by others around. Depending on the viewer and what they experience, they can relate to my work because it’s different for everyone.

^{For my project I have been tasked with exploring the topic encounters for my artwork; immediately I was drawn to the idea of exploring my own encounters with my physical health. I have struggled with my health for over 3 years now and it has massively affected my life as I was struggling with pain throughout my body with no diagnosis. This has then also affected my mental health as I have struggled to deal with something that I knew nothing about. I have decided to base my project around the encounters I endure throughout my pain and health diagnosis of Axial Spondyloarthritis.}

I chose this idea as my grandad owned a garden centre for a large part of my life, so from a young age I would spend a lot of my time there helping him run it. I now realise it taught me a lot of valuable life lessons. I now work part time at a different garden centre, so I have grown up around nature and link a lot of my memories with it. For example, memories with my all family come from being at the centre and a lot of the friends I have are from work.

Statement

The project itself was about my own encounter which was about my childhood memories and my limited time with my cat Muka, I wanted to create beautiful artwork base on my cat personality as she was my encounter, so I decided to make a canvas painting, a sculpture and two digital drawings. The reason why I started to draw tigers because the white tigers reminded me of my cat as my younger self imagen her as a beautiful cat. In one of my digital drawings was based on a real-life picture that I had of my cat, so I wanted to recreate it as it meant a lot to me as a person. The other digital drawing was a base of study practices to understand the body language of a tiger. The sculpture was made from clay as it was small and painted white with white acrylic paints as it was made for the base where she was young kitten who was so tired that just wanted to sleep all day. the final thing was the canvas painting, the reason I done a painting of a tiger staring at you was because I wanted the viewers to get hyphenizes by her beautiful blue eyes.

This piece combines themes of neurodiversity, mental health, alongside the negatives that one occurs with these daily encounters. The focus is sea life, specifically jellyfish, and morphing that within the setting of how judgement can affect someone, especially if we do not know what troubling encounters they are going through. The words we say can sting, much like how a jellyfish would and we wonder when the words will stop.

I focused on encounters I have had in my subconscious mind. The images displayed perfectly capture the certain feeling that my dreams create. These sorts of environments are appealing to the eye, since the broken-down backrooms feel that these abandoned places give, resonates with me and my dream-state. The screen-printed tote bag represents a childhood reoccurring nightmare of a dog attacking me.

For this piece, I have combined vibrant visuals of various encounters I have photographed throughout my project to encapsulate the teenage experience. To effectively capture the energetic atmosphere behind these moments, I have replicated the images using pigmented strokes of oil pints and embroidery on canvas. My intention with this medium was to enhance elements of colour and form in a manner that brings the visuals to life, inviting the viewer to feel as though they are entering a youthful world of chaos and excitement.

I have used this project to debate the pros and cons of social media. I have filled my project with personal pieces which highlight my own issues with social media addiction. Throughout this project I have explored themes of loneliness and questioned if social media is the cause of many teenagers’ social anxiety. I have explored how social media effects our relationships causing us to compare them to those we see online, negatively interfering with them. I believe that I have been successful using a range of fine art techniques, my imagination and extensive artist research to debate these concerns.

This artwork dives into my mum encountering a new life a fresh beginning. Her journey of leaving her home country Jamaica and coming to London to live her dream of becoming a fashion designer/teacher and encounter life in a different country. It also depicts my mothers age progression from the right hand side board being of a younger version of my mum and my uncle. These two pieces shows two countries (U.K and Jamaica) combining as one and gives you an insight of what life in Jamaica was and still is like from the descriptive writing. This is a mixed media piece with a range of materials used, such as hand embroidery, digital drawing, sublimation and screen printing and text printing.

For this piece I wanted to do something that signified my love for boyfriend above all. After some thought, I thought about our milestones and achievements as a couple. At the very beginning of our relationship, I had a lot of anxiety around the idea of physical touch and eye contact. I felt insecure and worried and spoke to my boyfriend about it. He reassured me he was only with me because he enjoyed my company and that he’d help me overcome my fears by taking it slow and helping me realise I deserved to love and be loved. I told him I needed some help to push myself out of my comfort zone so he said we could practice eye-contact. Everyday we were together we’d sit and look at each other for as long as I was comfortable and now its almost too difficult to look away. I chose to name it ‘don’t look away’ as at the beginning he’d say it but now the person saying it is me.

‘Metamorphosis’ and ‘Reflective’

Statement

“Metamorphosis” represents the idea of becoming a new version of yourself and how we change throughout life. The left side of his face appears to be melting or fading away as he metamorphosis into a new version of himself. Blue hues represent the sadness or calmness that we may feel when letting go of who we used to be. The butterflies symbolise freedom and transformation of life as they are considered more beautiful than the caterpillars they once were. 

“Reflective” is painted on a mirror so you can reflect on the encounters you have had in your life. It shows ageing – you can often tell someone’s age by their hands. The colourful hand shows youth and energy, the monotone hand represents an older person who has less energy. The heart connects the two and demonstrates love.

This piece is about my paranormal house. I chose the title for the piece as ‘Are You Ok? You Look Like You’ve Seen a Ghost’ as there’s the literal concept of the image of me seeing a ghost. The image is scene style image in realism as this is a real-life scenario I have experienced in my home. The ghost child is a real spirit I have seen in my home. When I feel him there, I can see myself through his eyes. I can see myself in the kitchen from the position of behind the stairs and when I turn around no one is there.
