Statement
This project is based on the word ‘Semiotics’ where I produced a trailer for a short story comic. The story is about a girl called Destimona who suffers from social anxiety, she creates an imaginary world called ‘The Mind Land’. This imaginary world is a reflection of herself that manifests into mythical creatures. This is where the story begins… Inspired by American McGee’s Alice (2000) and Alice Madness Returns (2011).

In this project I tried to explore the meaning of semiotics and how the word is used to define meaning in many ways. This required me to look at many definitions of the word and how it has been used throughout our generation. The concept of the word helps build up the many ideas on how humanity operates in understanding and processing words, images and sound in their own way. Due to the unfortunate circumstances lockdown has caused, I had to divert from my original idea and instead make some short animations which highlight what I’m going for in my work. The work I produced is revolved around the elements and symbols, I felt that these two ideas would make for a good story and how people portray themselves with the power they are given. I took some inspirations from other artist such Chris Askham and converted their style and mixed it with mine to make these pieces.

Statement
For this project I wanted to create something to show off my creative skills, using my idea generation to help me achieve this goal. Looking at recent events happening in the world today made me unhappy at how people are treated, this inspired me to create visions of a place that is fairer to people. Somewhere simpler, more diverse, and interesting. This piece is a top down map of the fantasy world I created. It is separated into four quadrants, Sea, Mountains, Forest, and City. People are free to choose how they want to live and are not held down by any sort of societal pressure or discrimination.

Statement
My work has always been inspired by nature and animals and, for this project, I decided to focus on ‘The Tree of Life’ and the lives of the animals who live in and around it. When designing my characters, I always try to suggest their personality in their design, making them more individual and to give them life.

‘Semiotics — Life after Death’

Statement
This project was to make an animation based around the word ‘semiotics’, but with the sudden circumstances I had to adapt my way of working and the final outcome. Instead I created a comic based around semiotics and Greek mythology. Using symbols from vanitas paintings in my characters designs and body language I was able to make a short comic around Hades and Persephone, in a simplistic style. This final project was more catered to the individual and what they believe are symbols, making every student’s work unique.
