‘Nightmares’

Progressed from

Hertford Regional College — UAL Level 3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Fine Art)

Statement

This piece was inspired by all things horror, looking into video games, movies and books. I wanted to be able to show the elements of scary things in art and within dreams. I took a lot of inspiration from my own dreams as I documented what happened in each dream and applied it to my own work. I used different mediums to create this piece such as oil pastels, oil paints, colouring pencils and inks.

‘Passaddhi Mudra (A Tranquil Gesture)’

Progressed from

Chace Community School — UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design (Fine Art)

Statement

‘Pasaddhi Mudra’ is a triptych painting featuring alluring mudras adorned with scintillating bangles, almost dancing in the light. The symbolic gestures create a calming synergy between them, grounding the viewer into a moment of peace. I incorporated my own designed repeat pattern, inspired by 16th-century Mughal Empire art, which I also applied to fabric to create a unique sari. When draped over a figure, the once-flat rectangle transforms into a dynamic representation of living shape, form, and space. My aim was to cultivate an atmosphere of meditation and reflection, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the splendors of Indian art.

‘Personal Journeys ’

Progressed from

Freman College — A levels

Statement

These pieces reflect on my personal journeys in and around Barcelona and Paris, inspired by artist Robert Rauschenberg, Sven Prommer, Gerard Fromanger and Lorette C Luzajic. I was motivated by the way they turned their journeys into different art forms, depicting their adventures. I did the same, I want my work to tell a story and I want to be able to share my experiences through the use of art in the hope to inspire people to explore the world around them and take in the beauty within their surroundings. My final pieces present my personal experiences using a mixed media approach as I loved working with layering and different textures because it adds a lot of dimensions to the work of art.

‘Documentation of Queerness Throughout History’

Progressed from

Leventhorpe — Sixth Form

Statement

My theme for this project was the documentation of queerness throughout history. I explored aesthetics prevalent in artwork from the medieval era through to today as well as queer artists and figures throughout history, while acknowledging the countless who were censored and erased. I would summarise this project with the phrase, “we have always been here”, and my final piece aims to capture the unique experience of existing as a queer person with few figures from history to guide you.

‘The Lone Dancer’

Progressed from

Chauncy School — Sixth Form/A Levels

Statement

The Lone Dancer captures queer isolation and forced femininity through film. Using a 1920s style and inspiration from German expressionist cinema. The film showcases my own individual experience and the effect that growing up queer had in me.

‘Boarding and alighting’

Progressed from

Highlands school sixth form — A levels

Statement

This series of work explores the significance of public transport and how it contributes to people’s lives, especially in reference to memories. I was interested in these often-overlooked places such as train stations and bus stops, whilst some may not think or notice them, they play an important role in creating memories of significant points in our lives. I chose to depict my own journey to college with each piece focusing on a different form of public transport that I take, using the colours and patterns found within these spaces to create the work. Combining textile with printmaking to create a series of collages that show how I personally view and remember these spaces and how the environments can impact their users.

‘Once Upon A Time’

Progressed from

Freman College — Sixth Form/A Levels

Statement

Within my FMP I explored the influence of fairy tales and the role within society these tales tell young girls they should conform to. I used fairy tales as they are old fashioned tales but still relevant today in the way women are treated within society. The original work produced, (seen in the photograph) represents the way society wants women to be, innocent, naïve and passive. Whereas the ruining of my work shows the ruining of the patriarchal image of women; to gain agency and independence. I want my work to have its own moral of the story to young girls that you don’t need anyone else to save you, you have yourself.

‘Dreams’

Progressed from

St Marks West Essex Catholic School — A levels

Statement

This work was inspired by my childhood and the idea of how I dreamed to be a princess. The corset idea stemmed from childhood films and characters from the Barbie and Disney Princesses franchises. I like to think that the corset reflects both aspects of dreams whether it’s the goals and aspirations side as well as the nightmare aspect of immobility and a lack of freedom. The corset also highlights the psychological side of my individual childhood as a little girl relating to gender schemas.

‘Enfield in Stitch’

Progressed from

Highlands School Sixth Form — A levels in Fine Art, Geography and Psychology

Statement

This mixed media textile series highlights key locations in the borough of Enfield, where I live; inspired by the works of mixed media artists Cas Holmes and Tina Jensen. Each piece examines a different place in the borough that is significant to me. I wanted to showcase these areas that while perhaps overlooked by some, are greatly appreciated by local residents such as myself. The majority of the pieces blend paper, card and other found materials with recycled fabric; with key components from each scene being highlighted with free motion embroidery.

‘Psychology of Art – Craftfulness’

Progressed from

Wanstead High School — A Levels

Statement

The focus for my FMP was to acknowledge and understand the extent at which being creative can be beneficial for the mental health of individuals while exploring the positive implications it has on their general wellbeing. I used the book ‘Craftfulness’ by Rosemary Davidson and Arzu Tahsin as the main guide for my project which provided useful research indicating that “when the brain and hand connect in deliberate, repetitive and focused movements, it can be useful for diffusing stress and distracting the mind from negative thinking loops”. Alongside my FMP I involved myself in the Kvadrat ‘giving scrap a second life’ project where I used scrap fabrics to create my final piece inspired by my previous digital experiments.

‘Culture’

Progressed from

Presdales School — A levels

Statement

My sculptures reflect cultures I’ve seen whilst travelling in Japan, Australia, Bali and England. I took inspiration for my pieces from temples and art galleries I went to, as well as street work. When looking at Japan and Bali I thought about what sculptures there really stood out to me, which were both statues from shrines/temples meant to protect the sacred areas. Growing up in England I always associated the country with lions, especially with statues of them everywhere, to the point that they’re overlooked. For Australia I decided to look at the part of culture I saw the least about when there but was most interested by which was the aboriginal culture there, looking masks and shields with interesting shapes and patterns that I reflected in my work.

‘A memory in twelve paintings’

Progressed from

Freman College — A Levels

Statement

This work is a reflection of the shared memories I have with my grandad. As time passes and he finds it harder to recall recent events, our time together at Wrest Park during my childhood becomes increasingly important. My appreciation of architecture, the natural world, gardens and history come together in this work to show their value in our lives. During recent visits, I have observed grandparents and their grandchildren making their own memories. I hope they mean as much to them as mine do to my grandad and I.

Human Bodies’

Progressed from

Freman College — A Levels

Statement

These pieces are aimed to expose internal factors of the human body externally, and to present a new perspective of the human body to viewers. For this project, I initially took inspiration from Senga Nengudi’s installation ‘R.S.V.P’ which utilised nylon tights and sand to create weighted sculpture. Which sparked ideas of the flexibility of human skin, demonstrated in my wire frame sculptures. A lot of this project also became science based considering the research of Alexander Fleming and the growth of penicillin for bacterial growth and cellular patterns, which I then demonstrated an interest in these textures through my print work on reclaimed fabrics.
