‘Crisis in Suburbia’
Simon Balle School — A-levels
It’s 1953 during the height of the Cold War, and married couple Walter and Nancy are living the American Dream in their perfect home in Levittown, New York. But past accusations hang over their heads. Three years ago, Walter, a screenwriter, was featured in the damning newsletter Counterattack, wherein he was accused of being a communist. Meanwhile, Nancy has been suffocating in isolation, acting the perfect wife. But the painkillers get her through, and she’s recently gotten into ham radio, making new friends who don’t care about the accusations. It’s taken years to repair their reputation, but now more and more ordinary American citizens are being subjected to loyalty tests by the government.
