Statement
This series of work looks at how language can create a feeling of alienation. My project focused on the plight of refugees; why so many choose to travel dangerously to ‘safer’ countries and the difficulties they face within the countries they have found haven. So many refugees become alienated, particularly women, as a result of the language barrier and lack of contact with the outside world due to the household traditions of their previous country. I found images of boards and walls with writing from areas in which most refugees come from, I decided to replicate these on canvases. Creating an alienating feeling for a Western viewer, somewhat creating an understanding for the refugees and the difficulties that come with language and how it can cause alienation.
